BTEC Level 1 Introductory Award and Certificate in Public Services

The BTEC Level 1 Introductory Award and Certificate in Public Services offer schools an engaging and practical way to introduce learners aged 13 to 15 to the world of public services – including careers in the police, fire service, armed forces, and prison service.

These qualifications build essential life and employability skills such as self-management, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, while boosting confidence through hands-on, real-world learning.

Why choose this qualification?

  • Career exploration
  • Skill development
  • Confidence building
  • Preparation for employment
  • Personal growth

What will learners study?

Learners will complete a mix of core units (such as research, planning, and time management) and sector-specific units linked to real-world public service contexts. These are designed to develop key skills and introduce learners to the values and responsibilities of working in public services.

There are two qualification options:

  • Award: 2 units | approx. 70 guided learning hours
  • Certificate: 5 units | approx. 180 guided learning hours

Topics may include:

  • Being Organised
  • Developing a Personal Progression Plan
  • Planning and Navigating a Route
  • Contributing to your Community
  • Taking Part in Sport and Adventurous Activities
  • Finding Out about Public Services

How is it delivered and supported?

The course is delivered by your school, acting as our delivery partner, using a flexible model that fits your existing timetable. In addition to classroom-based learning, learners may take part in team-building exercises, practical tasks, and visits to public service organisations, gaining hands-on experience and valuable insight into the sector.

Throughout the course, learners receive regular guidance, feedback, and encouragement from their delivery team to help them stay on track, build confidence, and succeed.

We also encourage parents and carers to take an active interest in their child’s progress, as support at home plays a vital role in learner success.
