Expectations & Code of Conduct

The Westminster Award is a prestigious and life-changing process, delivering experiences intended to enrich and develop every young person who takes part.

The Cadet Vocational College Westminster Award is an annual competition designed to recognise the achievements of young people who regularly accomplish the extraordinary in their everyday lives. As such, it requires full commitment from the participants, as well as a number of Cadet Vocational College staff to run it, and volunteers who give their time to help out.

The process begins in late autumn with youth group leaders being invited to put forward deserving young people who could potentially progress through a number of stages, culminating in a 10-day expedition and lunch at the House of Lords.

Below is a concise summary of what Cadet Vocational College expects from participants, followed by details of what we will provide in return:

What we expect:

  • Behaviour commensurate with the prestige in which the Westminster Award is held.
  • A zero tolerance approach to bullying and discrimination in all forms.
  • Commitment to the process, and attendance at each stage is essential. If a learner is unable to attend a stage, they are unlikely to be able to continue with the Award, unless agreed by the Principal and Chief Executive. You will not be able to attend lunch at the House of Lords without completing the whole of the expedition experience.
  • Compliance with the values, standards and policies of Cadet Vocational College and the candidate’s nominating youth organisation, at all times.
  • Participants will be required to help to create a supportive and inclusive environment throughout the process.
  • Details of any special considerations, additional needs, complaints or concerns as clearly as possible, enabling appropriate support and/or resolution.
  • Completion of the ILM Level 3 qualification prior to expedition, unless previously agreed by the Principal and Chief Executive. Attendance at the House of Lords lunch will also be dependent upon completion of the ILM Level 3.
  • Participants to be able to travel to meeting point for selection and the expedition at their own expense.
  • Positive participation in all activities provided, commensurate with ability.
  • Receptiveness to instructions, advice and guidance from Cadet Vocational College staff and partner organisations.
  • Become an enthusiastic ambassador and role-model for future Cadet Vocational College learners.

What we will provide:

  • Positive personal development opportunities at each stage
  • Support throughout from qualified and experienced Cadet Vocational College staff, partner organisations and mentors (including candidates who have previously taken part in the Westminster Award)
  • A safe, inclusive and supportive environment for young people at all times
  • A Cadet Vocational College -delivered ILM 3 qualification in Leadership and Management
  • 10 days adventure/volunteering expedition for finalists
  • Celebration lunch (normally at the House of Lords) for finalists and their families
  • An alumni club which will offer support to you as your career progresses
